Central Asia, Northern Persia (Iran), ca. 19th century CE. A large and vibrant Rasht embroidery panel, crafted with intricate silk embroidery and applique fabric pieces set atop a foundation of wool flannel and cotton in red and black, bordered with vivid yellow felt. The surface is richly adorned with chain stitching executed using a metal crochet hook, resulting in a beautifully raised texture throughout. Some decorative elements are cut from cloth and either layered beneath or integrated into the embroidered motifs, adding depth and dimension. Nearly every inch of the textile is alive with dense, scrolling floral patterns, culminating at the center in a flourishing vase of flowers, evoking the feel of a lush garden in full bloom. The piece is mounted in a modern frame beneath acrylic for preservation and display. Size of textile: 53.5" L x 48" W (135.9 cm x 121.9 cm) frame: 57" L x 52" W (144.8 cm x 132.1 cm)
Compare to a similar example in the Denver Art Museum, accession number 2016.361. The city of Rasht, situated along the Caspian Sea, earned a distinguished reputation for its fine embroidery, supplying works to the Safavid court at Ardebil and ultimately cultivating the signature art form known as rashti-duzi. Traditionally executed by male artisans within well-organized workshops, Rasht embroidery was used in various decorative and ceremonial contexts - furnishings, tent panels, shrouds, table covers, and more.
