European, "T. Mullaart" handwritten in pencil on stretcher, ca. early to mid 20th century. A quaint European townscape, painted in oil on canvas and set in a golden frame embellished with stylized floral and leaf motifs. The artist welcomes us in to the scene with a balustered walkway in the foreground. The vernacular architecture of the town is charming and hints at the lives of the folks living there. We see open windows, some furnished with shades or curtains, and a few flower boxes. Laundry is hanging on a line before the main floor dwelling on the lower right, just beyond the baluster. Two townspeople are walking down the street between the facades of the buildings, and above them is a bright blue sky dotted by a few billowing clouds. Rendered in a realistic manner with a rich color palette, a charming scene of a European neighborhood providing glimpses of the daily lives of its residents. Size: 12.75" L x 9.75" W (32.4 cm x 24.8 cm)
