A stunning Emile Galle cameo acid-etched two-layers river landscape glass vase presenting an elegant form adorned with lush foliage along a reedy riverbank rendered in shades of olive green and caramel brown against a frosted background of warm cream and amber hues, all above a circular foot of deeper chocolate brown hues. Galle's river landscape patterns were usually inspired by views along the Moselle or Meurthe rivers in the Nancy area. A breathtaking example of Art Nouveau art glass by Emile Galle, a brilliant innovator of the French Art Nouveau movement. Size: 12.125" H (30.8 cm)
About the Artist: Emile Galle was a French glass artist and designer who is widely regarded as one of the most innovative creatives of the French Art Nouveau movement. Galle is best known for his mesmerizing nature-inspired designs in Art Nouveau art glass and furniture. Galle was born in Nancy, France and his pursuit of art glass is not surprising given his family's influence. His father was a merchant who sold ceramics and glassware in Nancy, and his father-in-law owned a mirror factory in Nancy. His father eventually ran his mother's family business, manufacturing glassware adorned with floral motifs. Galle studied natural science and philosophy at the Lycee Imperial in Nancy, and at age sixteen he began working for the family business assisting his father in creating floral motifs in glass and faience. The young Galle also developed himself as a botanist, studying under D. A. Godron, director of the Botanical Gardens of Nancy and author of books about French botanicals. When his studies were complete, Galle went to Weimar, Germany to further his studies in botany, philosophy, drawing, and sculpture. Emile Galle would become a leading figure in the Art Nouveau movement in Nancy, France and co-founded the Ecole de Nancy or Nancy School in Nancy, France in 1901.

Marked "Galle" on the tapered end of the vessel body. Smooth pontil mark on underside of foot. Light scuffs on the body and underside of foot. Otherwise excellent with no chips.
