Ancient Near East, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A fabulous relief panel carved from dark-grey schist depicting the Buddha seated amongst a gathering of attendees. Buddha sits in a lotus pose atop a platform supported by a pair of laying figures, wears flowing garments, and holds his left arm atop his leg. The entire relief scene is presented within an upper and lateral border of oscillating vines and foliate motifs, and a wreath of flowers frames the hair-nodule-adorned head of Buddha.
