Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, ca. 600 to 950 CE. A striking example of Mayan artistry carved from a roughly rectangular mottled green stone of inherently beautiful verdant green hues with russet inclusions, depicting a frontally facing deity or shamanic lord with an expressive visage comprised of coffee bean shaped eyes, an angular nose, and full lips, donning a cap-like coiffure or headdress and large earspools. To the right is another visage, this one oriented sideways with wide-open circular eyes and a schematized nose and mouth. Bilaterally perforated at each end for suspension. Custom stand. Size: 1.75" W x 1" H (4.4 cm x 2.5 cm)
This piece is particularly impressive, because the sculptor worked to include two figures in the confines of the stone's shape by turning one visage at a 90 degree angle. The Mayans had a knack for intriguing compositions that departed from perspectival, naturalistic representations and instead utilized the given shape of a stone to convey as much as possible. A masterful demonstration of complex, incised figurative work that creates the impression of a three-dimensional image on a relatively compact, flat surface. A truly stupendous example!
