**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Mixtec people, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A vibrant hand-built pottery bowl with a shallow terra rosa cavity; accented by a beautiful cream-colored exterior with a light terracotta hue. The body of this bowl sits atop five conical legs with spherical pointed ends which perhaps could be the representation of five birds. Each of these hollowed, tear-drop shaped legs have a circular hole drilled through them which could be interpreted as round bird eyes. What makes this bowl special is that within these hollow cavities are tiny stones which act as rattlers if the bowl is lightly shaken. The minimalist appeal of this piece is complimented by its complete uniqueness in form and function, and the controlled display of color--the burnt red hue being a staple of the Western Mexican Identity of the era. Furthermore, it is quite rare to find an artifact like this example in such excellent condition. Size: 7.5" Diameter x 3" H (19 cm x 7.6 cm)
Provenance: ex private Valencia, California, USA collection acquired before 1985
