Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful matching pair of ornate earrings hammered from sheets of 87-90% gold (equivalent to 20K+ to 21K+) with petite lapis lazuli inlays within the central bezels. The shield-form bodies are adorned with twisted gold filigree around the peripheries and retain slender gold strips that adhere to the back of the lower, bar-shaped component. Each lower bar has a pair of protruding hemispheres that flank a central stone inlay, and the lower periphery features three wire loops with dangling spherical beads shaped from either banded agate, greenstone, or glass globules in red, blue, or green hues. A magnificent pair boasting impressive style, artistry, and technique. Size of largest (glass beads): 0.875" W x 2.2" H (2.2 cm x 5.6 cm); quality of gold: 87% to 90% (equivalent to 20K+ to 21K+); total weight: 9.1 grams.
