Felice Beato (English, born Italy, 1832-1909), "Crucifixion and Gokumon" hand-colored albumen silver print, ca. 1863 to 1868 CE. A historic photograph that captures a dark moment of Japanese history. Suzugamori was the sight of gruesome executions of Tokugawa shogunate criminals, Christians, and anti-government conspirators achieved by burning alive, sawing in half, and crucifixion from 1651 to 1871. There was also a detention center in Suzugamori; however, the area was primarily dedicated to executions. This hand-colored albumen print shows a crucified body of the servant Sokichi as well as three decapitated heads displayed on wooden poles. Label on verso is incorrect, because the photographer has been identified as Felice Beato and it dates ca. 1863 to 1868 according to the Getty Museum. Photo shows expected fading, but the imagery is still quite vivid. Taped to mat, but could easily be removed.Condition
