Southeast Asian, ca. 20th century CE. A monumental stone sculpture of the elephant-headed Hindu god Ganesh standing with 4 arms: one holding a dish of sweets and the other 3 each holding the head of a snake. A dhoti and lion's hide hang from an elaborate belt at his hips as a jeweled necklace and chest ornament adorn his upper body. His long trunk dips into his bowl of sweets. Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati, is a Brahmanical (Hindu) deity known to clear a path to the gods and remove obstacles in everyday life. He is loved by his devotees (bhakti) for his many traits, including his insatiable appetite for sweet cakes and his role as a dispenser of magic, surprise, and laughter. However, Ganesha is also the lord of ganas (nature deities) and can take on a fearsome aspect in this guise. A beautiful sculpture and a perfect ornament for a mediation garden! Size: 14.8" L x 24.8" W x 58" H (37.6 cm x 63 cm x 147.3 cm)
Ganesha or Ganesh, the elephant-headed deity, is the son of Shiva - one of Hinduism's three principal gods - and his consort, Parvati. He is revered as the remover of obstacles and a bringer of prosperity, good fortune, and well-being. According to Hindu mythology, his unique appearance, featuring an elephant's head with a single tusk and a childlike body with a rounded belly, stems from a legendary tale. Parvati created Ganesha in human form to guard her chambers, but when he denied Shiva entry, the god beheaded him. To console the grieving Parvati, Shiva replaced Ganesha’s head with that of the first creature he encountered - an elephant.
