Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Sinu/Zenu culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. An extremely long Sinu gold nose ornament with a narrow, curved nose section and overall hammered body tapering to flared wing ends. The gold is 86% pure, equivalent to 20K+. This is an intriguing piece, fascinating for its abstract form that, while some 1000 years old, boasts a design that rivals any modern aesthetic. The Sinu people lived along the Caribbean Coast and in the river valleys of Colombia from around 200 to 1600 CE. They were gifted in many ways, known for their extensive irrigation systems, the significant political roles of women in their society, and of course, their exquisite goldwork. Size: 11.6" W x 1" H (29.5 cm x 2.5 cm); 2.5" H (6.4 cm) on included custom stand; the gold is 86% pure, equivalent to 20K+; 26.4 grams
In the 16th century, the Spaniards were impressed by the opulence of the Sinu's ceremonial burial gold. Some of this gold was cast using the lost wax method; however, much was also hammered into reliefs and plates with the utmost artistry and skillful technique, like this exceptional nose ornament!
