Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque, ca. 500 CE. A finely modeled standing female figure in buff-hued pottery, depicted bare-chested and wearing an elaborate headdress formed of two sweeping elements that curve down past her shoulders. Her face is detailed with large circular earspools, a prominent nose, and a slightly parted mouth, while her neck and chest are adorned with layered, beaded necklaces. Incised bands encircle her upper arms, suggesting jewelry or ceremonial markings, and her skirt falls straight to the ankles, leaving her small feet visible. The figure's full, rounded body and elaborate adornment may indicate high status or ritual significance, reflecting Jama-Coaque traditions of portraying important individuals - possibly priestesses, rulers, or attendants in ceremonial dress. Figures of this type are thought to have been placed in tombs or ceremonial contexts as symbols of fertility, social identity, and spiritual protection. Size: 8" W x 12.1" H (20.3 cm x 30.7 cm)
