East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A cast bronze figure of the legendary warrior-monk Benkei, the devoted vassal of samurai Minamoto no Yoshitsune, depicted in the act of stealing the massive Miidera Temple bell. His flowing robe is adorned with a rich gilt wash, and a tanto sword is tucked into his waist sash. He firmly grasps the bell handle, intricately sculpted with dragon motifs, while the bell bowl, cast separately, rests upon a shallow base. His upraised hand, likely once holding a mallet, is now empty, though a wooden replacement mallet has been included. The sculpture is mounted to a wooden base for display. This piece is attributed to the Miyao Eisuke workshop style, celebrated for its bronze craftsmanship. Miyao Eisuke (1850-1920), founder of the Miyao Company in Yokohama, gained prominence for his highly detailed ornamental bronzes that blended Japanese mythology and artistry, captivating Western collectors with their exotic elegance and cultural depth. Size: 10" Diameter x 23" H (25.4 cm x 58.4 cm); gold quality 1.8%
According to the myth, Benkei carried the bell on his back up Mount Hiei to serve the rival Enryakuji Temple, but when struck, it rang with a mournful tone as if longing for its original home, even crying out, "I want to return to Miidera!" in some versions of the tale. Enraged by the bell's defiance, Benkei hurled it back down the mountain, where it eventually returned to Miidera.
