Kathy Berenstein. Cat Lady paper mache sculpture + artificial birds (some with feathers), nests, and butterflies, 2009. Signed and dated on cat lady's back. Certain to bring a smile to any cat lover, a sizeable hand-painted paper mache bust of an endearing "Cat Lady" who is dressed to the nines - wearing an off-the-shoulder animal print dress, elegant long red gloves, white polka dotted black beads joined by a trio of fluttering butterflies around her neck, and a fancy sun hat with cutouts for the feline's pointy ears, a wide red brim adorned by eight more butterflies along with four pairs of birds with two pairs (cardinals and lovebirds respectively) occupying their nests, as well as orange, black and white detailing on the underside to match the trim adorning the ruffly bustline of her dress. The feline gazes out with her big green eyes, perky black nose, pink blush highlighting the bridge of her nose as well as her cheekbones, long whiskers, and slightly parted red lips indicative of purring. A humorous take on a "Cat Lady" who is more like the "Cat's Meow" than an elderly spinster who lives with many cats. Size: 13.25" L x 14.5" W x 27" H (33.7 cm x 36.8 cm x 68.6 cm)
Artist's Statement: "As a self-taught sculptor and painter I create forms from intuition and emotion. With gallery representation I was encouraged to study intensively formal fine art painting and sculpture. My passion is experimentation in different media, including paper mache, acrylic, rock, decoupage, chicken wire and mosaics. I work in a sophisticated whimsical style which to me is like dancing…another joy working with line, shape and color creating the visual image. Art inspires me with joie de vivre, especially when others resonate with a piece I formed." (Kathy Berenstein Fine Art)
