Central Africa, Southern Sudan / Democratic Republic of the Congo, ca. 19th century or earlier CE. A side-blown olifant trumpet carved from elephant ivory, featuring elaborate leather fittings and etched ornamentation. The instrument's curved form is etched with circlet patterns, forming decorative bands that wrap around the tusk. A raised side mouthpiece sits near the tip, which is also pierced for a tone hole. The flared end is encased in dark, stitched leather that extends several inches past the ivory's edge, while additional leather rings reinforce both the midsection and mouthpiece area. Ivory trumpets such as this were prestigious instruments, often associated with royalty and authority. Adorned with metal, hide, or incised motifs, they played a central role in ceremonial contexts - from battlefield signals to royal announcements and ritual celebrations. Size: 24.5" L x 3.5" W (62.2 cm x 8.9 cm)
