Native American / First Nations, Northern United States, Alaska / Canada, Inuit, ca. 20th century CE. A carved seal made from a single and massive piece of whale bone - possibly from the shoulder or skull of the animal! White bone discs are inlaid as eyes, and the front and rear flippers are carved into the bone. This is roughly the size of a small adult ringed seal or a large pup from another Arctic species! Carvings of animals Inuit hunted commemorated the spirit and the respect ensured successful future hunts. Whale bone sculpture requires the use of older bone that has dried and ossified - new bone will splinter and be too oily to carve- hence the wonderfully aged and weathered appearance. Size: 29" L x 10.5" W x 10.5" H (73.7 cm x 26.7 cm x 26.7 cm)
