Europe, South Germany, ca. late 17th to early 18th century CE. A large cast-bronze signal cannon with thick lateral lugs, a pair of curving lifting handles, a knob-handled end cap, and a lengthy barrel. The lateral lugs rest within two grooved carved into the arms of the wooden cart support. The front of the cart is suspended in the air by a slender axle connecting two eight-spoked wooden wheels, each with iron treads and dozens of nubbin traction teeth. A horizontal bar on the back of the cart has a small drilled hole into which the pin of the tow cart is inserted for ease of movement. A ring loop on either exterior side enables the cannon to be raised, lowered, and moved at will. Lovely caramel-hued patina covers most of the wood, imbuing it with a nice, lustrous appearance. Size: 25.75" L x 10.75" W x 9.5" H (65.4 cm x 27.3 cm x 24.1 cm); 43.7" L with tow cart attached.
