Southeast Asia, Thailand, Rattanakosin period, ca. late 18th to 19th century CE. A standing brass Buddha, lavishly adorned with brilliant gold leaf and vibrant glass and mirror inlays to catch and reflect the light. Both hands are extended in the Abhaya Mudra, the gesture of fearlessness and protection, signifying spiritual reassurance and the compassionate power of the enlightened being. He wears elaborate royal attire, with flowing drapery and intricate flame-like motifs embellishing the shoulders and ear ornaments of his majestic crown - symbols closely associated with celestial authority and the divine right of kingship. The Rattanakosin period style, also known as the Bangkok style, emerged during the late 18th century when Bangkok became the capital of Thailand. It is characterized by elaborate ornamentation, royal iconography, and a heightened sense of refinement reflecting courtly aesthetics and Theravada Buddhist ideals.
