East Asia, China, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden apothecary chest for containing a plethora of various ingredients important to Chinese medicine. The rectangular body has forty-two lengthy drawers, each with four receptacles lined on the inside with red felt and with an ovoid brass handle on the exterior, and three larger drawers on the bottom each have two felt-lined receptacles and a crescent-shaped brass handle. A quartet of petite legs support the entire chest and give it an elegant appearance. Size: 19" L x 32.75" W x 44.875" H (48.3 cm x 83.2 cm x 114 cm).
Provenance: Mark Clayton collection, Long Beach, California, USA; Mr. Clayton is a noted African art collector who recently had Nigerian bronze objects from his collection featured in an exhibition at the UCLA Fowler Museum entitled "Summoning the Ancestors" (September 2018 - March 2019). Minor abrasions to drawer faces, body, and legs, with slight bending to forms of some brass handles, and white chalk residue inside some body cavities that may indicate specific ingredients, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and fine patina throughout.
