Pre-Columbian, Honduras, Ulua Valley, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 850 CE. A beautiful hand-built pottery cylinder with a flat base, tall walls with an outward bulge around the shoulder, a lightly-flared rim, and a deep basin. The pair of stylized handles depict abstract condors with protruding black-painted heads featuring large circular eyes and a rounded beak as well as intricate red-and-black painted bodies with outstretched wings, small feet, and elaborate feathering, all atop an orange ground. A pair of registers above and below the condors exhibits abstract zoomorphic pseudo-glyphs, and the base is decorated with additional pseudo-glyphs which alternate between red and black hues. Size: 7.9" W x 6.9" H (20.1 cm x 17.5 cm).

Repaired from multiple large pieces with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines, with some areas of light overpainting as well. Minor abrasions to handles, body, and base, with light fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout. Old collection label beneath base.
