Western Europe, Germany, France, or England, ca. 12th to 14th century. A formidable iron longsword of the two-handed or bastard type, featuring a long, wide blade with a partial fuller and a slightly offset, sharpened tip. Its extended grip, originally covered in materials like leather, wood, bone, or ivory, would have been crowned with a large, likely rounded pommel for balance. The sword’s defining feature is its rounded, tapered guard with a rare ringed design, suggesting it was purpose-built for use on horseback. An impressive example of medieval craftsmanship, this piece embodies both functional design and battlefield presence. Size: 45.75" L x 11" W (116.2 cm x 27.9 cm)
Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private W.P. collection since the 1990s, acquired on the German art market
