Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. An intriguing pair of matched anthropomorphic figures built from pottery that presents with minimalist physical characteristics and highly stylized faces. Both the male and female figures stand nude upon delineated, conical legs and broad feet with splayed toes, hold both arms out from sloped shoulders, and bear perky nodules atop their pectoral muscles. The physiognomy of both heads exhibits white-painted mouths between broad red-orange facial panels, ovoid eyes flanking petite noses, and tab-shaped ears, with the male’s brow showcasing a trio of projecting spires, and that of the female with a smooth, unperturbed appearance. Size (male): 10.9" W x 18.625" H (27.7 cm x 47.3 cm); (female): 10.875" W x 18.2" H (27.6 cm x 46.2 cm)
