• Lot Description
  Max Harrison Blain (American, 1906-1993). "Mystery Canyon" oil on board, ca. 1950s. Signed at lower right and on verso with title. In "Mystery Canyon," a captivating painting by Max Blain, the viewer is transported to a majestic Utah landscape where towering sandstone cliffs, kissed by the soft hues of a cerulean sky dappled with pearl-white clouds, guard the secrets of a hidden valley. Shadows dance and deepen across the rugged terrain, hinting at untold stories etched into the ancient rock, while hardy desert flora speckle the ochre earth, whispering tales of resilience in the face of timeless grandeur. A sense of profound stillness permeates the scene, inviting the viewer to step into this enigmatic landscape and unravel the mysteries held within its silent, sun-drenched embrace. Size of painting: 29.5" W x 23" H (74.9 cm x 58.4 cm); of frame: 36.25" W x 29.75" H (92.1 cm x 75.6 cm)
  
  About the artist: "Max Harrison Blain of Spring City and Mount Pleasant, Utah, was a rather well-known realist landscape painter (snow scenes, houses, trees, mountain ranges, roadways, etc.) who studied with John H. Stansfield (q.v.). He worked in oils and transparent watercolors and was a secondary schoolteacher-artist of note in Sanpete County. Blain became art supervisor for the North Sanpete School District. He was a graduate of Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, as well as Brigham Young University, and exhibited in New York City and many towns and campuses throughout the West. Blain is best known for his western landscapes; at least three paintings by him are in the Snow College Collection." (source: artist's bio on Springville Museum of Art website)

  Condition

  Signed at lower right and on verso with title. Mounted in custom frame. Some miniscule stains and surface grime and minor streak of gold pigment to upper left, but imagery is still clear and painting is in overall very good condition. Areas of nicks and abrasions to frame and tearing to gallery paper on verso; none of which affect painting. Suspension wire on verso for display.
