Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, El Salvador, Mayan, Copador, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A gorgeous Mayan Copador polychrome pottery bowl adorned with a pair of abstract avian figures on both the interior and exterior surfaces. The interior birds have a minimalist presentation comprised of large beaks, diminutive bodies, and broad tails, each appearing to chase the other, and both enclosed with thick crimson bands. The exterior birds are characterized by large heads, stalky legs, and rectangular tails, with the figures separated by red border lines and two sections of faint crosshatch motifs. Above the exterior avians is a narrow register displaying three additional pale-orange birds set against a red ground. Slip-painted with dense zoomorphic imagery, this is a fantastic example from the Mayan ancients! Size: 5" W x 2.25" H (12.7 cm x 5.7 cm).
