Western Europe, probably England or France, late Medieval to proto-Renaissance period, ca. 14th to mid-15th century CE. A beautiful relief panel carved from chalky-white limestone and presenting an elegant image in relief. The slender neck is revealed above a singular slanted shoulder which gives her a regal or possibly saintly appearance, though exactly who this represents is a mystery. Her gentle visage is formed with enormous almond-shaped eyes with delineated pupils, curved brows which narrow to form the prominent nose, puffy cheeks, pouty lips above a rounded chin, and a crescent-shaped forehead surmounted by a curly coiffure with cascading bangs. The walls of churches and important structures throughout western/northern Europe were decorated with figural imagery of important individuals as an homage to their significant feats or sacrifices in the name of church and country. A gorgeous and refined example of high-quality Medieval artistry! Size: 8.875" W x 10.5" H (22.5 cm x 26.7 cm).
