New World, Guatemala, ca. mid 20th century CE. A large and intriguing carved wooden face mask depicting an elderly individual. The face is comprised of wide ovoid eyes, emaciated cheeks, cupped ears, a prominent nose, and notable facial wrinkles, with upturned eyebrows and red-painted detailing. Atop the head rests a thick blue handle with four yellow and green bulb-shaped protrusions. A slender, conical point projects from an ovoid bulb above the forehead, and a pair of sinuous, teal-hued bars wrap around the brow line. The entirety of the upper element resembles an upside-down hummingbird, though the "animal" does not exhibit any defining facial features. Painted in a palette of vibrant colors, this is a fabulous mask from Guatemala! Size: 7.375" W x 12" H (18.7 cm x 30.5 cm).
