North America, South Eastern US, Mississippian culture, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A hand-modeled ceramic bowl with opposed effigy handles: one depicting a feline-like head with prominent muzzle and ears, the other a tightly coiled serpentine tail. The form and symbolism suggest representation of the mythic Underwater Panther — a composite creature revered in Mississippian cosmology, combining the predatory power of a wild cat with the sinuous form of a serpent. Edges notched through the use of a stick. Surfaces smoothed and lightly burnished, with mineral accretions and patina from age. Size: 8.5" L x 6" H (21.6 cm x 15.2 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired prior to 2002
