Elasmosaurus sp.; found in Phosphate Deposits - Khouribga, Morocco; Late Cretaceous, 73 to 65 million years ago. A natural group of associated fossil vertebrae from a huge Elasmosaur marine reptile in original plaster jacket with all bones still in their original positions. This is a rare supreme grade association of fossil bones of a type of plesiosaur called an Elasmosaur. The surrounding sand matrix has been carefully removed to better expose the bones. A hardener was applied to the bones and matrix to make the entire piece stable and safe to display. The size of the vertebrae centra shows this is from a huge pliosaur! The color is natural and only minor repair was done to the bones. Size: 16" L x 16" W (40.6 cm x 40.6 cm); each vertebra centrum measures 4.5" W (11.4 cm) across
When stood up on the stand and lit from above, the very high 3D relief of the bones makes the piece an incredibly impressive display specimen. Because the bones are associated, this piece is from an elasmosaur that died and was buried. An excellent specimen from a real-life sea monster of the prehistoric seas.
