Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Sinu, ca. 1000 to 1550 CE. A beautiful and wearable necklace strung in modern times with dozens of ancient stone and 5 high quality gold beads 81.4% to 82.4% (equivalent to 19K+)- finely cast via the lost-wax (cire perdue) process to depict abstract hummingbirds or possibly flying insects such as mosquitos! Whether avian or insect, the beads carry layers of symbolism. Hummingbirds were associated with the sun. Appreciated for their shiny, iridescent feathering and aerial acrobatics, hummingbirds made for the ideal solar metaphor. Rainfall, a symbol of fertility, brought swarms insects such as mosquitos - larvae transformed and emerged from the water with wings to feed on life giving blood. Along the strand are additional 19 spacer beads made from 76.67% to 77.26% gold (18K+) to balance the brown stone beads.
