Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Nicoya, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A delightful Nicoya ceramic double vessel, its two rounded chambers joined by an arched bridge handle and set upon four conical legs. Each bowl is encircled by a register of punctate decoration beneath the rim, while the exterior walls are adorned with bold relief modeling in the form of stylized zoomorphic faces. The eyes, snouts, and curving brows of these creatures emerge in high relief, giving the vessel a lively and animated presence. The surfaces display the warm orange and buff tones characteristic of Nicoya polychrome and burnished wares, with areas of darker firing clouds testifying to its ancient kiln firing.
Size: 12.1" L x 5.4" W x 5.1" H (30.7 cm x 13.7 cm x 13 cm)
Vessels of this type were likely used in ceremonial contexts, possibly for holding foodstuffs, liquids, or ritual offerings. In Nicoya cosmology, zoomorphic imagery often bridged the realms of the human, animal, and supernatural, with composite features invoking protective or transformative powers. The double-chamber form may have symbolized duality or balance, concepts central to Mesoamerican belief systems. This example reflects the technical skill and symbolic depth of Nicoya ceramic traditions during the late period of their florescence, when artisans produced sculptural vessels that were as visually compelling as they were imbued with meaning.
