Oceania, Australia, Northern Territory / North West Arnhem Land, Alligator River region, Gunbalanya / Oenpelli, Bininj culture, ca. early 20th century CE. A large bark painting of Namarrkon (also known as Namarrgon or Mamaragan), the Lightning Spirit central to Bininj cosmology. Painted in natural pigments on eucalyptus bark, the elongated figure stretches sinuously across the surface - its extended limbs evoking the storm clouds from which lightning strikes. Stone axes emerge from the knees, signifying Namarrkon's violent power and his role as an enforcer in Dreaming law. Namarrkon is a recurrent figure in Arnhem Land rock art, with one of the most iconic renditions found at Nourlangie Rock. His depiction is not merely artistic but ceremonial: only those with proper ancestral and cultural authority are permitted to render this spirit. Size: 39" L x 27" W (99.1 cm x 68.6 cm)
