Oceania, Polynesia, ca. early 20th century CE. A well-preserved war club made from kwila wood, with a gently curved shape that broadens into a heavy end for striking blows. Kwila wood is traditionally used for Polynesian weapons, which, prior to European contact, focused on hand-to-hand combat using clubs like this one. The beautifully patinated surface of the wood here attests to the age of the piece. Size: 2.6" W x 16.5" H (6.6 cm x 41.9 cm); 18.2" H (46.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection; purportedly ex-Bonhams
