Roman, Imperial period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. An evocative leaded bronze sculpture depicting Jupiter (Greek Zeus) in the form of an eagle swooping down to lift up the youthful, crouching Ganymede. Nude save for a Phrygian cap, the boy defensively flails his arms as the great raptor pounces on him from behind, grasping at his hips with its large talons, ready to uplift him and fly to Mount Olympus. In Roman mythology, Jupiter, the king of the gods, fell in love with the beautiful mortal boy Ganymede. Captivated by his beauty, Jupiter transformed into an eagle and carried Ganymede to Mount Olympus. There, Ganymede was granted immortality and became the cupbearer of the gods, serving nectar to the divine beings. As a reward, Jupiter placed Ganymede among the stars as the constellation Aquarius. This myth symbolizes themes of divine favor, transformation, and celestial immortality. Size: 2.3" L x 5.9" W x 4.9" H (5.8 cm x 15 cm x 12.4 cm); 5.4" H (13.7 cm) on included custom stand.
