Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE; Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A delightful jasper intaglio featuring a satyr and a dog mounted in a Neoclassical ring of over 22 karat gold to be wearable. Striding left, the satyr plays an aulos as an animal hide swings from his back, his canine companion sitting in front of him, gazing up at the instrument. The crimson-hued stone is beautifully complemented by the gold ring which presents a hemispherical bezel with raised bands surrounding the intaglio and a gold wire rosette on the verso, all set on a graceful gold ring body with decorative, recessed stripes. A stunning piece of wearable history! Size of intaglio: 0.6" L x 0.4" W (1.5 cm x 1 cm); of ring: 1.3" L x 0.9" W (3.3 cm x 2.3 cm); US ring size: 8.25; gold quality: 92.33% (22.2 karats); weight: 8.4 grams
While depictions of satyrs are common in Roman art, portrayals of satyrs specifically interacting with dogs are less frequent, though not entirely absent. When they do occur, these interactions often emphasize the satyr's wild, untamed nature. Dogs, in Roman contexts, typically represent domestication and utility. Therefore, a satyr's association with a dog might serve to highlight the clash between civilized order and untamed wilderness, or perhaps suggest a satyr's occasional, perhaps mischievous, intrusion into the domesticated sphere. Alternatively, a dog accompanying a satyr could be seen as a symbol of the satyr's connection to the natural world, with the dog representing a wilder, less civilized form of canine than those typically found in Roman homes. Such depictions, though rare, provide a fascinating glimpse into the complex symbolic language of Roman art, where the juxtaposition of these two figures could convey a range of meanings related to nature, civilization, and the Dionysian sphere.
