Classical World, probably Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. Finely carved from white marble, an Ionic column with wonderful scrolled volutes - these elements most characteristic of an Ionic capital - flanking a passage of egg and dart on the front side, all above a band of acanthus leaves. The Ionic order was first used for the monumental Temple of Hera (ca. 570-560 BCE) on the island of Samnos by architect Rhoikos and was also featured in later works such as the famous north porch of the Erechtheion (421-407 BCE) on the Acropolis in Athens. The Ionic order was appreciated for its graceful proportions as opposed to the more masculine (according to Vitruvius) Doric order. Size: 5.25" L x 6.75" W x 3.75" H (13.3 cm x 17.1 cm x 9.5 cm)
