Roman, Imperial period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A large transport amphora enveloped in extensive oceanic encrustations- attesting to centuries spent at the bottom of the sea - one side with considerably less mineralization- the body must have rested on this side against the floor or another surface! The flaring spout, twin ribbon-form handles, and pointed base on this one is standard for the type of storage vessels that were shipped across the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas starting around 600 BCE and during the Byzantine Empire. Amphora like this held water, wine, olive oil, and grains and other precious goods that were traded across the Roman Empire during this period. Sailing accidents and shipwrecks were not uncommon, and thus cargo such as pottery, often survived, protected at the bottom of the ocean. Size: 15" Diameter x 25" H (38.1 cm x 63.5 cm); 31" H (78.7 cm) on included custom stand.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report will accompany the item upon purchase.
