Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A sterling silver brooch in the form of a stylized rooster, rendered in the bold, geometric manner associated with ancient Aztec and broader Mesoamerican art. The verso is stamped "STERLING" without any maker's mark. The design is attributed to Hector Aguilar, though this example is not his work; unlike signed Aguilar pieces, which feature layered, separately formed elements, this brooch is cast as a single piece. Fitted with a pin and safety clasp, the piece is fully wearable and showcases strong sculptural lines with finely incised detailing throughout. Size: 4" L x 2.25" W (10.2 cm x 5.7 cm); silver quality: 94% to 95%; weight: 42.3 grams
Hector Aguilar (1905-1986) was a renowned Mexican silversmith and jewelry designer, celebrated for his bold modernist interpretations of traditional Mexican motifs. Based in Taxco, Guerrero, he managed and designed for William Spratling's Taller de las Delicias before establishing his own workshop, Taller Borda, in 1939. Aguilar's work is distinguished by clean, architectural lines, innovative use of geometric forms, and exceptional craftsmanship, often incorporating pre-Columbian and indigenous design influences. He became one of the most influential figures in 20th-century Mexican silver, earning international acclaim and helping to cement Taxco’s reputation as a center for fine silver artistry.
