Western Europe, Spain, Renaissance, ca. 1500 CE. A beautiful two-part reliquary cross known as an "enkolpion," comprised of both gold and silver (41% gold [equivalent to 9K+ gold] and 57% silver). The front plate of the cross has a quartet of three-lobed arms, a central crucifix pierced through the center, and a small hinge along the lower end. The main body of the cross exhibits a similar form as the top, has two leaf-adorned branches projecting from the lateral arms, and features two pierced lock holes on the upper and lower arms. Reliquary crosses have hollow interiors meant to hold small but religiously-significant articles from past saints and members of the Holy Family such as a tooth or a lock of hair. Condition
Hinge on bottom is damaged, with modern wire holding both halves together. Slight bending to overall form of top panel and lateral branches, with minor abrasions to verso and peripheries, and light encrustations within interior. Front panel still opens to reveal interior. Light earthen deposits and fine patina throughout.
