South Asia, Sri Lanka, Kandy, ca. mid-20th century CE. An ebony wood elephant statue adorned with high-quality silver panels and inlaid bone toes, featuring a faceted red glass piece on the forehead - all elements indicative of ceremonial regalia associated with the Kandy Festival. The Kandy Festival, or Esala Perahera, is a grand annual procession held in Kandy Sri Lanka to honor the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. Elephants play a central role in the celebration, revered as sacred and majestic symbols of power and protection. The most esteemed elephant carries the relic in a domed casket housed within a ceremonial turret known as a ransivige - a miniature brass stupa-shaped casket is affixed to the turret, representing that sacred tradition. Size: 5.5" L x 3" W x 7.5" H (14 cm x 7.6 cm x 19 cm); silver quality 86% to 92%
