Ancient Near East, Persia, Parthian Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A matched pair of fierce gold earrings - the gold 74% or equivalent to 18K+. Each is a thick hoop decorated with delicate granulations that extend partway around the body down from the terminals in swags and lines. At each terminal is a dramatic lion head with bulging eyes and granulated manes; delicate curled wires form nostrils. Suspension loops atop could be fitted to a modern setting to be wearable. A stunning pair of earrings that no doubt signified opulence! The Parthians amassed their wealth via extensive trade networks, and this made it possible to patronize the arts. In addition to sculpture, ceramics, and coins, jewelry was among the favored luxury arts.

Condition
Both are in lovely condition with very slight bending to form and a few tiny deformations of the surface. Both have been cleaned. A professional jeweler could make them wearable but they do not currently have anything to affix them to the ears.
