Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 360 to 320 BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery bale amphora - so named for the bale handle at the top - with a flat base, a bulbous body, a rolling shoulder which tapers to a cylindrical neck, a wide funnel mouth, and a flared rim. The bale handle on top has a projecting suspension loop rather than a perforated tab as is typically the case with other examples. The majority of the body is adorned with a black glaze covered in faint areas of silvery iridescence, the shoulder being the only area of exception with its repeating parabolic motif. A wonderful example of classic Campanian pottery boasting an impressive style and a fabulous appearance! Size: 4.75" W x 9.75" H (12.1 cm x 24.8 cm).
Provenance: private Houston, Texas, USA collection; ex-Bonham's London Antiquities Auction, 8 May, 2013, part of lot 62; ex-private Swedish collection, acquired in Stockholm, Sweden around 1985
