Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A gorgeous cast-brass statue of Amitayus Buddha, seated cross-legged in meditation on an integral lotus plinth, holding an intricate ambrosia vessel known as the kalasha, which contains the elixir of eternal life. He is adorned with necklaces, bracelets, elaborate earrings, and an ornate bejeweled crown, as well as flowing garments etched with the longevity symbol (shou), a circular design representing enduring life. His eyes are cast downward beneath sweeping brows and a central urna (third eye), symbolizing spiritual insight. Amitayus is especially significant in long-life rituals in Tibetan Buddhism, as reflected in the longevity motifs on his robes and the presence of the kalasha. Devotion to Amitayus, through meditation and rituals, is believed to prolong life, enhance well-being, and bring spiritual blessings. He is closely associated with Amitabha, the Buddha of Infinite Light, and their names are often used interchangeably in Buddhist traditions.
