Central Asia, Tibet, ca. mid-20th century CE. A canvas thangka painting mounted on silk brocade depicting Yamantaka Vajrabhairava, the wrathful buffalo-headed meditational deity, shown with multiple heads, arms, and legs, in embrace with his consort, standing on a lotus pedestal within a halo of flames. Surrounding the central figure are additional wrathful deities in dynamic poses, each standing or seated on separate lotus bases, set against a background of swirling clouds and stylized landscape elements. Above, rows of smaller buddhas and lamas with golden halos are arranged in tiered formation, flanking a central seated figure. Flanking temple structures and cloud formations appear at the mid-level. The composition is bordered by a dark purple inner silk frame and golden patterned silk brocade, with a yellow protective silk veil. The reverse features a floral-patterned cotton backing.
