Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 20th century CE. A ceremonial mala garland composed of gilt copper heads and skulls attached to a length of cotton and silk brocade cloth. This type of ritual adornment was worn by Buddhist dancers or monks during ceremonies honoring Mahakala. The heads, representing vanquished demons and Citipati skulls, are hollow with openwork mouths, fanged teeth, and repousse and chased detailing, further highlighted with black, lacquer red, and gold gilding. The faces display a range of expressions - some snarling, others with eyes bulging. Despite their fierce and grim appearance, the skulls and distended eyeballs symbolize impermanence, death, and wisdom, as well as the bodily elements associated with the five senses. The inclusion of Citipati imagery reflects their role as guardians who protect the Dharma (Buddhist teachings) from forces of dejection and ignorance. Size: 56" L (142.2 cm); largest head: 4" L x 3.5" W (10.2 cm x 8.9 cm); gold quality: 4% to 11%
