Central Asia, Tibet, ca. mid-20th century CE. A canvas thangka painting mounted on silk cloth depicting the Refuge Tree composition, centered on a Buddhist lama, radiating divine presence, seated on a lotus throne within the branches of a tree. He is surrounded by rows of smaller lineage figures wearing red halos, arranged in tiered formation with additional deities and teachers placed in clouds at the upper corners. Large pink blossoms frame sections of the composition. At the lower section, the tree trunk, temple buildings, water features, and seated attendants are depicted. The painting is bordered by patterned golden silk brocade with an inner purple-gray silk frame and a yellow protective silk veil. The reverse shows block-printed floral cotton backing and the textiles are attached to a wooden dowel stick for suspension and rolling up for storage. Size: 41" L x 28" W (104.1 cm x 71.1 cm)
