Southeast Asia, Borneo, West Kalimantan, Sanggau District, Bidayuh People; Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. 20th century CE. A striking pairing of two finely handwoven 20th century baskets from distinct island traditions. The larger, from Papua New Guinea, is of broad, flaring form with a deep, conical body and an openwork rim that creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. The tight, darkened weave bears the patina of age and use, with subtle variations in tone and texture that attest to the artisan's skilled hand and the basket's functional past. The smaller, from the Bidayuh people of Borneo, stands upright in a tall, rectangular form with a square base. The meticulous checker-pattern weaving is accented by vertical red-dyed strips along its seams and a matching red-stained base, details that not only strengthen the structure but also convey cultural aesthetic preferences. Bidayuh baskets of this type were often used for storage or carrying goods, combining utility with quiet elegance. Size of larger: 19" W x 6.4" H (48.3 cm x 16.3 cm)
Together, these baskets capture two distinct indigenous weaving traditions from the Pacific and Southeast Asia, each reflecting its maker's intimate knowledge of local materials and forms honed over generations. Their shared craftsmanship and cultural resonance make them compelling pieces for display or study.
Tall basket was exhibited in 2023, August 4-November 3 in "Looking Again" at Ralph T Coe Center for the Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA.
