Northern Europe, Viking culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A fascinating ovoid rock crystal pendant wrapped in a sheath made of hammered 24 karat gold sheet. The gold sheet is shaped like a helmet, with a rounded upper portion and two long "cheekpiece" style flaps that secure the pendant in place. These meet with a rounded cap at the base. The flaps have been stamped with triangles, while there is a ring of stamped concentric circles around the base of the upper portion. The beauty of the rock crystal shines through the gold. An ancient loop made of wrapped silver wire is at the top of the pendant. Comes with modern cord for wearing. Size of pendant: 0.7" W x 1.55" H (1.8 cm x 3.9 cm); length of modern cord: 27" L (68.6 cm)
The use of rock crystal immediately calls to mind the Visby lenses, found in 11th to 12th century CE Viking graves on the island of Gotland, Sweden. These are rock crystal carved and smoothed to create a parabola - possibly a lens used as a type of telescope, although this has been hotly debated by scientists. This rounded rock crystal pendant, however, was just intended to be for decoration.
