Eastern Europe, Russia, Palekh, ca. 1972 CE. A beautiful hand-painted and varnished wood and papier mache box with a hinged lid. The box has a red interior and a black lacquered exterior. Tempura paint is delicately applied across the body of the box in swirling filigree patterns. The lid is detailed with a stylized knight riding a horse through a dazzling landscape. The scene is from the legend “Ilya Muromets” in which the hero knight is stopped at a crossroad; here the green stump contains arrows and written directions. The lid is signed on the bottom left with the artist’s name and to the right is a number 15414, the village PALEKH, and the date 1972. After the 1917 revolution, Russia banned the production of religious iconography, and thus the traditional icon painters began painting characters of fiction from fairy tales or poetry. Gold, which once adorned Christian themes now embellishes the stylized motif of this knight. A stunning piece of Russian folk art that would make a nice keepsake box! Size: 5" L x 4" W x 1.75" H (12.7 cm x 10.2 cm x 4.4 cm)
