Oil. Catherine Hess studied oil painting in college but then worked primarily in watercolors for decades, learning in community classes and workshops. With her move from the Washington DC area to a Wellfleet home with a studio, she again took up oils. Her primary focus is landscapes, often done “plein air†or onsite. She loves being immersed in the outdoors, and it shows in her impressionistic paintings of dunes, marshes, shorelines and iconic buildings. She also creates monotypes and white line prints. Catherine showed her work in the Washington DC area when she lived there, and has exhibited extensively on the Cape. Her work has been chosen for many juried shows and has won awards in a number. Her art has been included in special exhibits at Addison Art Gallery and Garvey Rita Art and Antiques, both in Orleans, and she has exhibited at The Works Gallery in Wellfleet since 2021.
