Derek Macara is an American painter whose work captures the shifting light and raw beauty of Cape Cod. Raised in Provincetown, he was immersed in the town’s rich artistic tradition. Growing up near the Hawthorne School of Art, he was deeply influenced by its presence, which sparked his passion for art. He also spent a lot of time in his uncle’s studio, absorbing the creative energy of his work and the many artists who frequently visited and shared their craft.
Macara’s paintings reflect a deep connection to the coastal landscape - often moody, sometimes serene, always grounded in place. His scenes convey the rhythms of the sea and sky with a sensitivity to atmosphere and tone. Collectors are drawn to his ability to evoke both the physical experience and the emotional pull of the Cape. He lives and works in Provincetown, continuing the legacy of the historic art colony that shaped him.
