19th-century carved horn intaglio featuring a classical depiction of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and war. This finely detailed Victorian piece presents Minerva in full regalia, holding a spear and shield, with an owl—symbol of wisdom—beside her feet and radiating divine light from her helmet. The composition is carved in low relief within a circular medallion border, bearing the inscription "SACRA MINERVA" around the upper edge. Crafted from rich amber-brown horn, the plaque shows natural surface variation and a gentle curvature, suggesting it may have been mounted originally or formed part of a decorative panel.
Condition
Fair antique condition with age-related wear, minor warping, and surface patina. Small edge losses and a single mounting hole present. Beautiful translucency when held to light. The reverse shows traces of adhesive and a pierced hole, likely for former display purposes.
